In the earlier 90s, a gentleman named Simon Goodman (the grandson of the founder of Velocette) out of Great Britain built 17 examples of what he called the HDS 1200: a hybrid that combined a Norton Featherbed-style frame with a Sporster 1200 motor.
HDS stood for “Harley-Davidson Special” and the components included a Marzocchi fork, Koni shocks, Brembo brakes, and 18″ magnesium wheels. Claimed top speed was 125 miles per hour, and wet weight was 450 pounds. Unfortunately, Harley stopped supplying Sportster engines for creations like the HDS and Mr. Goodman could no longer get the engines at a cost-effective number. Goodman was looking at going with Ducati or Folan but that never panned out. I found a couple of period advertisements but they’re too small to make out all the details.
For more details, check out this period review on Cycle World from March 1992. I’ve only featured two of these before, one had an estimated selling price of roughly $17k but I was unable to confirm what it sold for. The other sold at Mecum for $9,350.
The seller of this example calls it #6 out of 10, I’m not sure how he’s confirming that and I wish it had more photos but I had to share it nonetheless. He notes that it’s got 1,800 miles and that the motor has a Screaming Eagle 1200 kit.
