The TDM850 was a bit of an oddball that was about 15 years ahead of its time. A pavement-focused dual sport like the Multistrada or the S1000XR, the TDM gave riders the ability to explore any paved road in comfort with the option to explore fire roads to their heart’s content. Unfortunately, not many riders in the US back in the early 90s saw the point, and it only sold in 1992-1993.
With a long travel suspension and an engine derived from the XTZ 750 Super Tenere (a bike that won Paris-Dakar), the TDM is a ‘do-anything’ road bike that’s not going to break the bank. While it sold very well in Europe, this bike was simply too ahead of its time in the States, and it sold terribly. You got great reliability (though some people had issues with clunky 1-2 shifts), 78 horsepower, 56 pound feet of torque, and reasonable suspension travel.
This example has just under 9,000 miles and is claimed to be in very good condition – however the seller ominously notes that “it may need some clutch work or adjustment.” The bike has a Corbin seat (never used OEM example included) and new tires. Find this TDM for sale here on Craigslist in Easton, Pennsylvania for $2,950.
