Post Sale Update: This 916 sold for $9,801 after 6 bids on Iconic Motorbike Auctions in Marina del Rey, California.
Over on the auction site today we’ve got a well-modified example of one of the early 916s. The first 2,663 examples of the Ducati 916 were built at the Cagiva factory in Varese – this came about as a fire broke out at Ducati’s paint shop in Bologna right as the production lines were spinning up to bring the world the prettiest sportbike of the decade. 641 of them were officially exported to the US.
You can identify the Varese-built bikes because the 11th digit of the VIN is a V. This example is VIN: ZDM1SB8S8SV000838, and it’s on offer by the second owner. The odometer shows 7,656 miles, and it’s not a bike for purists as it has carbon fiber bodywork, steel braided brake/clutch lines, Race Tech-prepped rear shock, Speedymoto clutch cover + triple tree, CFM rearsets, ProGrip tank pad, and a Fast by Ferracci carbon exhaust.
