Over on the auction site we’ve got an example of one of my favorite small-displacement four-strokes: the Honda Dream 50. This is an homage to their CR1100 race bike, Honda’s first 50cc GP racer. It was built for a couple of years in the Japanese market (and then for one year in the US with a race-only variant). This is one of the street-legal Japanese-market bikes that’s made its way across the Pacific.
Despite what you might normally expect from bikes with tiny engines, this bike had surprising amounts of tech, including dual discs and a dual overhead camshaft. Depending on who you believe, the engine either produced 5.6 horsepower at just over 10,000 rpm, or a whopping 7.0 horsepower at 13.5k. Either way, it’s tiny (just 157 pounds dry), it’s rare, and it’s pretty.
This example (VIN: AC151004398) came to us from our friend Naomi at Miyabee Plus in Japan, she’s liquidiating a few bikes and sent us a container of interesting JDM imports so we can find them new homes in the US. It has 2,466 kilometers (1,532 miles) and it appears that it was originally sold by the famous Red Baron dealership. Before it’s enjoyed on the road I’d say it needs the pilot jet cleaned, new tires/tubes, and a chain service.
It’s a lovely little bike and I may have had to take a quick spin on it before it went up for sale:
