When MZ released a limited edition race replica of their Skorpion, many enthusiasts were pleasantly surprised to discover that it was more than just a paint scheme – it shared several similarities with the factory race bike.
It wasn’t just fast – it was exclusive, too. MZ only sent 16 of them to the US in ’96, and each was given a special plaque on the triple clamps. Goodies included wider Marchesini rims, USD WP fork, Brembo Gold Line four-piston calipers up front and a two-piston caliper in the rear. The only arguable letdown was the bump in power: just 2 horsepower thanks to a revised exhaust. With a MSRP of over $10,000 when it was released, this bike was not a common sight.
That’s what makes this specific example such a joy to behold. It has spent the last 10 years being raced in Sportsman classes and being revised into a competent racer – the seller claims it now runs strong and starts instantly every time after an electrical fault was discovered and fixed and the engine was rebuilt (bumped up to 720cc). In addition, thanks to a new Penske shock and Race Teck fork service, “it now handles as well as possible.”
This bike also features a Mikuni single carb conversion, external oil cooler, Daytona temperature gauge, dual carbon fiber mufflers, Beasley fiberglass bodywork, Zero Gravity windshield, and a whole lot of spares that include engine parts, bodywork, two spare chassis, and more. It’s quite a package, and you can find it all for sale in Madison, Wisconsin for $6,000. Email me at abhi@bike-urious.com to be put in touch with the seller!
