Post Listing Update: Despite 41 bids up to $10,100, this toaster did not meet reserve.
Built between 1970 and 1973, BMW’s R60/5 was a tremendous step forward from the /2 generation. While most riders nowadays typically look for the larger R75, these are reliable under-stressed classics that can provide decades of enjoyable riding with just regular maintenance and a little love. Here’s a last year example looks great thanks to the Curry Gold Metallic paint job and the excellent care of an owner who had it for 41 years.
The 599cc boxer twin produced 46 horsepower, good for a top speed of 102 miles per hour. Wet weight was 440 pounds. For more on the /5 and why it was such a revelation, check out this story on Motorcycle Classics.
This bike (VIN: 2950760) shows just 18,544 miles on the odometer and it looks absolutely fantastic. It’s a long wheelbase model and it’s highly original. When the seller first spotted the bike (at Barber) he complemented the owner on how well restored the toaster tank was and the owner responded by saying he was the first owner and the tank was original. All the original paperwork is included, like the bill of sale, sales brochure, registration, owner’s manual, and even the MSO. I also dig the original extras – Bosch spark plug in the packaging, Varta battery manual, Rema TipTop patch kit, and more. I highly recommend that you check out the listing just to go through the seller’s photos of these parts. There’s been plenty of recent work to keep the bike running as good as it looks, and low Euro handlebars were recently installed.
