Post Listing Update: This SPS was pulled off of eBay, final sale price unknown.
I still find the 916/996 to be one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever made, so I feel obligated to feature the limited edition Ducati 996 SPS (Sport Production Special),an uprated version that featured a modified engine and chassis. Nearly all the specifications were improved, with lighter 5-spoke wheels, Ohlins rear shocks and Showa front forks, it was designed to be the ultimate 996, and it eventually evolved to become the one year only 996R.
Engine work included titanium connecting rods, ‘SPS’ cams, a lightened crankshaft, carbon fiber fenders, a bigger generator, and of course, Termi pipes. All this was good for an additional 12 horsepower, and the modified chassis made the whole package that much sweeter.
This specific Ducati 996 SPS (VIN: zdm3sb5v9yb003247) has an encouraging 23,555 miles and is #1290 of the SPS models built since ’98, though it’s #70 of the bikes brought to the US in the last production year of this rare bike. Upgrades include CRG levers, Sato rear sets, Megacycle rocker arms, Termignoni carbon exhaust, and more. It got a new clutch and windscreen 4,xxx miles ago, and the only flaw seems to be some fading of carbon fiber clear coat on the clutch cover and chain counter-sprocket.
