Have problems with traffic, but don’t live in California and enjoy the advantages of lane-splitting? Here’s your answer. BMW has provided motorcycles for many state and local police units, and the R1150RT-P was a model purpose-built for Police use. The basic bike was a stock 1150RT, but it had several optional modifications to safety equipment (crash bars), storage(radio topbox), and lighting (strobes and flashers). Over the years, BMW claims to have provided over 80,000 motorcycles for Authority use worldwide, mostly R1150 and R1200 variants.
This bike is an extremely low mileage model for a Police bike, at only 14,000 miles. It is also void of a lot of the excess lighting and crash protection you would expect to see. It does have the top box and comes with side bags, and there appear to be some equipment mounts on tank and bars. The seller claims to be the only owner since it was a Police bike, and has the original owner and police manuals that came with it.
If you are concerned about buying an ex-Police bike, there are several discussions (pro and con) regarding the subject on the BMWMOA forums and also on Sport Touring.net.
The R1150 has always been a very well-regarded touring bike. Whether you want to look like a cop is up to you, but I guarantee that if you ride this bike while wearing a white shorty helmet, khaki pants and a blue jacket, the seas of traffic will magically part for you…
