The BMW R1200ST was the short-lived successor to the R1100RS/R1150RS. It’s a very impressive sport-touring machine but it was an absolute commercial failure in the US. I’d pin that on two factors: first, this bike overlapped too much with the RT and the GS. Second (and more importantly)…it’s not very good looking. Just 554 were sold in the United States between 2005-2007.
If you’re looking for a capable sport-tourer, it’d be easier to do worse than this – as long as you can get over the looks. Take solace, though, as the bizarre looking headlight was one of the best OEM lights you’ll ever find in terms of output. And I guess the good news is that from behind the bars, it looks just fine? Factory luggage, excellent ergonomics, and a 5.5 gallon fuel tank made it easy to munch up the miles with the 109 horsepower boxer twin engine.
This example (VIN: WB103380X5ZM30289) has 21,700 miles and it’s well-equipped to do some touring thanks to the OEM saddlebags, Sargent seats, a Givi tank bag, bar risers, engine guards, extensions for the shift lever and brake lever, and a V-Stream windshield. The seller says it runs “like a thoroughbred” and it’s recently been serviced with new spark plugs, air filter, oil/filter, valve adjustment, ABS fluid flush, and a new front tire.
