Built between 2003-2006, the Ducati 999 (and the regular 999 it was based on) was initially met with mixed reviews with regards to the styling. But no one can deny the success that Ducati had in WSBK and AMA racing with the top-of-the-line 999R. To comply with AMA homologation rules, the States got 300 examples of the most powerful production V-Twin ever built. The MSRP was a hefty $29,995 but for that money (a $7,000 increase over the 999S) riders got 26 extra horsepower thanks to titanium valves and a revised head design. If that wasn’t special enough, Ducati made a few examples of the 999R in the Xerox livery used in SBK by James Toseland and Regis Laconi – here’s #69.
Other special features of the R included Ohlins suspension, radial brakes, the 145 horsepower motor, forged wheels, and a weight reduction down to 399 pounds. This was just about the ultimate track weapon to buy at the time – and it was definitely the best version of the last year of Ducati’s open class superbike.
This example is claimed to be in “absolutely outstanding condition” and the beautiful photos help support hat claim. It has just under 3,300 miles and its stock except for a tail tidy kit. Everything is said to work and the sale includes the OEM rear stand, bike cover, owners manual, and digital service manual. Unfortunately, it does not include the plaque that these came with when new, but it’s still a beautiful example of one of Ducati’s best production bikes. I didn’t care for the styling when this bike was first released but I think the design has aged very well – I suspect your interest in this Ducati will heavily depend on if you agree with me or not.
