For KTM fans, the letters RFR are something special. They stand for Rally Factory Replica, and they designate bikes that compete in legendary races all around the world.
The 2008 model got 80 horsepower and 55 ft-lbs of torque from the carb’d 690cc single, but the really impressive components were the 48mm WP forks with 11.8 inches of travel and the WP shock with 12.2 inches of travel. Dry weight was 357 pounds – that went up to 452 pounds of wet weight because of (among other things) the gigantic 9.5 gallon fuel tank.
These usually have some sort of privateer race history but the seller of this bike (who has done the Dakar himself on a 660 RFR) is pretty sparse on details. Still, he says it “has many new parts and have always been maintained” and that it has an Illinois title if you want to surprise people at your local bike night. A friend of the seller confirms that it was supposed to be used in the 2008 Dakar but that was canceled due to terrorism concerns, so it was instead raced in the 2009 Tunisia Rally and then used for private trips to Morocco afterwards.
