2013 KTM 990 SMT

For the second time this week, a prolific commenter on Bike-urious is letting go of one of his bikes. This time it’s Walter Barlow, who not only frequently contributes to the community via comments – he also shared a history of the Norton Commando and his thoughts after riding a Motus MST.

The idea of touring on a supermoto bike might seem like an oxymoron, but KTM somehow made it work with their SMT model – a motorcycle that Visordown called “the most sensible KTM in ages.” If you wanted to be simplistic, you could argue that KTM created the SMT just by taking their big supermoto bike and throwing on luggage and a larger windshield. Maybe you’d be right. But the riding position combined with 115 horsepower, 71 pound-feet of torque, and a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds means you’ve got yourself a fun urban assault vehicle that you won’t see other people on.

Walter has owned this since January of 2021, putting roughly 20k of the 36,891 miles on it. He says, “it’s a hoot to ride, but at 76 I want to get something with lean sensitive ABS/TC.

It’s well equipped with: ABS, stock & Renazco seats, SW-Motech crash bars and center stand, KTM driving lights, heated grips, KTM side bags, and 37L top case – he notes that he’ll be keeping the smaller/shorter trunk that’s in some of the photos.

Recent maintenance:
Oil/Filter change 3/10/2024.

F&R brakes, tires (Dunlop RoadSmart III), Scottoiler (installed, but I never used it), chain/sprockets replaced Summer of 2023 along with valve check (2 needed adjustment), battery replaced summer of 2022 along with coolant change, Knight Design slightly lower footpegs, accessory/additional rear brake lights, fork bleeders, Kriega fork seal covers, RAM mount, battery tender pigtail.

He notes that it “runs very well – a bit snatchy at low throttle levels, as many 990s were, but not at the level where I felt the need to correct it (as I had to do with the 990 Duke I owned).

I bought this from a fellow club member with a salvage title- he bought it from the insurance company after a low side, and he took care of the repairs, which were all cosmetic damage, except the gas tank scratch- I included a picture of it showing the damage which is not very noticeable (though I expect the expense of a new tank was probably a good part of the reason for totaling it).

This KTM is in Central New Jersey and Walter is looking for $6,500 OBRO. If you’re interested, send me an email: abhi@bike-urious.com and I’ll put you in touch with Walter!
