Yes, that’s $400,000. And that’s the (obviously unmet) opening bid!
The SB4 was Bimota’s take on the Suzuki GSX-R 1100 of the time, and just 272 were built – 34 of which were the even-more-exclusive SB4S model. 1 of those 34 has been converted into quite a custom by Harry Mailet of what used to be The Performance Works in California. As soon as he got his SB4S, he tore it down to the frame and then went to town, with new paint, a 1,325cc big bore kit, SuperTrapp bike, and other mods leading to approximately 130 horsepower.
The seller includes an article on this bike from a December 1986 issue of a magazine I cannot identify (it’s worth going to the listing just to read the article) which interestingly ends with a few notes. First, the quoted price of this 176 mile per hour rarity would be between $25,000 and $30,000 about 30 years ago. And in the words of the creator, “This SB4S is The Performance Works’ rolling showroom. I don’t expect to sell anything this work intensive…” Based on that, I wonder if the seller meant to start with an opening bid of $40,000 and accidentally added a zero. Whether the asking price is 5 or 6 digits, the condition of the chain and the brake discs make me sad.
