I’ll be frank – I’m not particularly interested in the LiveWire myself. But sharing this gives me an excuse to ask/answer an interesting question: in Q2 of this year, how many bikes do you think LiveWire (which H-D spun off as its own entity) sold?
Have a number in mind?
Well, the answer is 33. H-D also had some leftover inventory of Harley-branded (1st year) LiveWires, and in that same quarter they sold…none of them. So, not a great situation for Harley. Also not a great situation for anyone who bought one of the first year bikes, which had a MSRP of $30,149. After the first year, Harley knocked off nearly 10 grand from the price of a new one – so anyone who bought the initial run immediately suffered a gigantic depreciation hit. It’s even worse now – over at Iconic we recently auctioned off a 2020 LiveWire with 188 miles and we felt lucky to get $13,000 plus the 7% buyer’s fee. Some times, being an early adopter does not pay off.
On the flip side, if you want a LiveWire and are willing to wait for a used one, it’s a good time for you! This example (VIN: 1HD2XBEB9NB800073) has barely been ridden with just 516 miles on the odo. It still has some of the warranty left – the seller calls it “a pandemic impulse buy that I really don’t need anymore.” He adds that “it was almost $25k new“, and now he’s asking for a bit more than half that.
