To celebrate their 50th anniversary, Yamaha took their incredibly popular 1000cc sportbike and modified just 500 examples into near-production racers. The Yamaha R1 Limited Edition bikes have been in hot demand ever since, but this one stands out from its 499 brothers as it has just 0.1 miles on the odometer.
Specific changes made for the Yamaha R1 Limited Edition include an homage to Kenny Roberts and the original Yamaha racing colors with the lovely yellow/black/white paint, custom front and rear Ohlins suspensions – developed by the same team that took care of the Yamaha MotoGP bike of the time, Marchesini aluminum wheels designed specifically for this bike, a slipper clutch, and an integrated lap timer.
This specific Yamaha R1 Limited Edition is number 380 of 500, and as you’d expect from a bike with less than a mile on it, it’s pretty much perfect. It comes with all original paperwork, the rare OEM tool kit, and a difficult question…does it make sense to ride this bike, or will it be stuck in a museum/collection for the rest of time? Financially, a lot of the value may be lost once the mileage rises. On the other hand, I waver on how collectible this bike will be 20-30 years from now. Only time will tell!
