Post Sale Update: This Z1 sold for $19,666 after 36 bids on eBay.
I’m on a bit of a Z1 kick at the moment as I recently got to ride #265. This one’s got some issues, but what else would you expect from a bike with the serial number of the devil?
This weekend I went up to Northern California to visit reader Don P and try his early Z1:
Seeing as he’s an expert on the early bike, I asked him for some feedback on this one. As he noted, the first 1,500 bikes have slightly different colors than the rest of the bikes, but this example has the paint from a late ’73 example and a tank from a newer model (the tank badges were bigger starting in 1974). It has some reproduction parts like the exhaust and he told me that the head doesn’t look correct because “the vacuum ports should be cast into the head, not in the rubber connectors.” Don’t let this discourage you – just know what you’re getting into and what should be addressed if you want something perfect!
