As the seller points out, a ’97 900SS isn’t particularly rare. And I think the yellow looks much worse than the usual red. But…I could get over my disdain for yellow with this bike, because it’s very pristine thanks to the low mileage.
Ducati introduced the yellow paint scheme in 1997 as Ducati customers were moving away from the SuperSport to the Monster and 916. This is a CR example, which has a half fairing up front. It utilized Marzocchi front forks and a Boge rear shock. Though the new SuperSport is designed to be a practical sportbike that can be enjoyed every day, this generation was a bear in town thanks to a grabby clutch and long gearing. You’ll get your best enjoyment out on country roads. It’s not blisteringly fast – the motor produced 80 horsepower and you’d top out at about 135 miles per hour. But none of that really matters because this bike has been ridden so infrequently that it’ll need some investment if you want to use it instead of put it in a collection.
This example (VIN: zdm1lc4m7vb025259) looks like a time capsule as it is highly original and still has all of the original warning decals. The seller originally acquired it with the intent of making it his daily ride, but probably thought that it might have more value as a collectible. It sounds like he’s tried to sell it for a while and if it doesn’t find a new owner this time around he’ll go back to his original intent of putting some miles on the bike.
