77 Miles – 1990 Honda NSR250SP Cabin Racing

In the world of MC21 NSR250SP specials, the ’92 seems to get most of the love because of the Rothmans livery. But the ’91 (Pentax livery) and ’90 (Cabin Tobacco livery) are just as enjoyable, and the Cabin colors work for me – it’s been a long time since I’ve seen one. Like the other SP models, just 2,500 were built worldwide, none of which were officially exported to the US.

1990 was the first year of the MC21 generation for Honda’s popular 2-stroke 250. That generation debuted the PGM-III ECU, 17″ wheels, and the Gull-Arm swingarm. The limited SP (Sport Production) model was the one everyone wanted but might not have been able to afford back in the day – it was upgraded with magnesium Magtek wheels, adjustable suspension, and a dry clutch.

Power was restricted to 45 hp due to Japanese laws of the time. I’ve had the pleasure of riding several of the JDM 250cc 2-strokes – if I was looking for one to ride just once again, it would probably be a Suzuki RGV250 VJ23, but if I was looking for one to own and maintain, it’d likely be a MC21/28 SP.

This example (VIN: MC211009823) is owned by a friend who acquired it through SpeedWerks in 2018. It shows some of the typical corrosion seen on JDM bikes, but it has just 125 kilometers (77 miles). I hope the next owner changes that! It’s been serviced and is ready to ride.
