Post Sale Update: This X1 sold for the BIN of $4,495.
Presumably named after its year of release, the Buell X1 Lightning Millennium was a limited production run (800 bikes) that was all about silver aesthetics. 400 were sold in the US, 375 were sold in Europe, and I have no idea where the other 25 went. A typical example is rare enough, but this one has just 9 miles!
An evolution of the S1, the X1 was Buell’s answer to criticism regarding the ugly air filter and exhaust, as well as the useless seat. As it was mechanically similar to the base X1 Lightning, this Millenium Edition had fuel injection controlling the 1203cc engine which produced 95 horsepower and 86 pound feet of torque. The engine was out of Harley’s Sportster but was improved with Buell’s Thunderstorm heads – remember that the Sportster produced less than 60 horsepower, so Buell was really able to get some motivation out of this powerplant. This was good for a top speed of 135 miles per hour, though it was still capable of returning 40 miles per gallon.
This example (VIN: 4MZSS81J4Y3225567) is #600 out of #800 and as you’d expect, there’s an interesting story. The bike was originally purchased at Hal’s H-D in New Berlin for the buyer’s newborn son – it was titled but never licensed. The bike was prepped by the dealer for long term storage and actually stored at the dealership until 2016 (presumably because it was purchased, as the link above shows). Recalls were performed in 2010 and the only flaw is a paint bubble that’s popped on the top of the tank (the seller includes a photo in the listing).
