A Classic Approach – 1963/67 Triton

While not as rare as a unicorn, the Triton concept isn’t exactly a plow horse either. In the 60s the idea was to combine a best in the business Norton ‘Featherbed’ frame with a reliable and powerful Triumph parallel twin. There were a lot of these made in the day, and the combo certainly contributed to the ‘Cafe Racer’ craze. While some dealers made Tritons for sale, this pairing saw the rise of independent builders in and around London. It goes without saying that some Tritons were better than others.

The Norton Featherbed frame was patented in 1952 and widely considered the very best available (at least until the Isolastic frame from Norton in 1967) for racing or riding. Combined with Norton ‘Roadholder’ front forks and rear shocks it was a great package.

The TR6 Triumph motor and transmission unit was a 649 CC ( 39.6 CID) air cooled four stroke overhead valve motor with a 4 speed transmission in the same case which made the transplant to the Norton frame a relatively easy operation. As stock, the ‘67 TR6 motor made 42 HP.

This particular Triton is in Laredo, Texas and is listed as ‘custom built, many new parts, some refurbished, needs detail work.’ The list of parts and work is complete and impressive. The bike is currently priced at $6,500 with a Buy It Now price of $8,750
