It’s been a couple of years, but VyVy and I are finally getting the chance to hit the road again. Normally we try to go for a big international trip, but it’s been tough for me to get enough time away from Iconic as of late. So we’re going to bop around California for the next week, and you’re invited to follow along!
When Vy and I went to Spain a few years ago, BMW offered us our choice between a K1600 GTL, S1000 XR, and a R1200 RS. We ended up with the RS, however the GTL left an impression on both of us. As I put it years ago: Vy loved it – at one point I think she said something along the lines of “I can’t believe a motorcycle can be this comfortable.” I think I said “I can’t believe a motorcycle can be this big.”.
Well, BMW has just updated the big girl and that seems like the perfect excuse to give it a shot. Vy and I can’t take the usual two weeks to attempt an international tour, so this time we’re keeping it relatively local: ride up PCH to Monterey for a night, spend a few nights in San Francisco, then cross the state for a few nights in Yosemite.
Our model is adorned in what BMW calls “Style Exclusive”, a combination of Gravity Blue Metallic paint and a whole bunch of chrome. It’s also got a long list of premium options, and I’ll discuss those in a future post.
My goal will be to share some sights – both touristy sights we encounter along the way and insights on how the new GTL holds up as a 2-up tourer. Have a great July 4th, and maybe I’ll see you out there on the road!
