Post-Listing Update: This CRF450R racer did not get any action at $10,500, or at the lower relisted price of $8,995.
Kevin Windham (also known as KDub) was considered by some to be one of the best motocross racers to never win a national championship – though he placed second overall five times. 2005 was a dramatic year for him, as a few weeks before the season started his wife gave birth to a baby girl and his mechanic committed suicide. Despite the distractions, he powered through to win the opening round of the 250 SX (450s four strokes were allowed to compete with the 250 two strokes) championship in one of the muddiest races in history on this very Honda CRF. Some rounds, this bike got a special livery to celebrate Sobe’s “No Fear Gold” energy drink.
After the season was over, Works Connection (sponsor of the race team) kept the bike, though the works Honda engine, Showa suspension, and Nissin brakes were removed and sent back to their respective manufacturers. Stock components were used to replaced the race pieces but Works Connection rehabbed the bodywork so they could take the bike on tour for exhibition. Eventually, this bike made its’ way to Mike Owens’ collection to be used in the Legends & Heroes traveling museum, and he got Windham to sign the front number plate.
