Post Listing Update: Despite 35 bids up to $7,601, the reserve on this Laverda was not met.
The 750GT was Laverda’s introduction to the American market – though it was actually under the brand name of American Eagle. It all goes back to a man named Jack McCormack. McCormack worked for Honda and helped Suzuki start selling bikes in the US before he decided he wanted to work for himself. So he started American Eagle and was able to offer a range of bikes from 80cc to 750cc. He contracted with Laverda to produce the big bike, and that was the Italian firm’s big break across the Atlantic.
This bike (VIN: 750*1392) is an early example that’s listed as a ’69 on the paperwork, though the seller quotes Tim Parker’s Laverda Bible suggesting that it is actually a ’68 based on the serial number – it’s one of the first 350 to 400 Laverda twins built.
The seller has had this bike for nearly 3 decades, though he started a rebuild on it 10 years ago because it was a basket case when he acquired it. The engine has been rebuilt and it’s claimed to run great – it got 10:1 SFC-type pistons plus 30mm carbs and medium-profile cams. The odometer isn’t flawless and it “doesn’t correspond especially well with the speedo drive gear,” so you can disregard the 5,000 miles showing on it. The frame, tank, and sidecovers were repainted and the original seat was recovered. The wiring system was rebuilt with relays for the lights and horn. Interestingly enough, the seller also offers free online/phone ‘tech assistance’ for the buyer as long as wanted. He’s had over a dozen Laverdas and clearly enjoys the experience.
