On September 21st in Stuttgart, Germany, Bonhams will be auctioning off some of the collection of Willi Balz, a German entrepreneur best known for founding Windreich, a wind turbine company. He’s got several vintage cars and bikes – let’s take a look at the latter.
There’s a total of 43 vehicles on the block, 21 of which are motorcycles. Click here for the complete list, or read along to see my favorite 3 bikes:
1. My favorite is this 1957 BMW Sidecar Racer – estimated to sell between $9,000-$11,000.
It’s clearly been used although there’s no evidence of a race history. Fueling is handled by dual Dell’Orto carbs, and the front brake is a four leading shoe unit. Everything looks OK bu there’s been no attempt to start the rig.
2. 1947 AJS Model 18C Trials – estimated to sell between $3,400-$4,500.
This bike is said to have an older restoration and it’s equipped with a Smiths speedo, and Amal carb. THe engine turns over with compression but it’s clearly been sitting for a while. No keys or paperwork included.
3. 1957 Norton Manx Model 40 Racer – estimated to sell between $18,000-$23,000.
Also stated to be an older restoration, this bike is said to be in “generally good condition.” It’s got a Petty gearbox, megaphone exhaust, Manx fuel tank, and four leading shoe front brakes. Bonhams has not tried to start this beauty.
Willi Balz – you’ve got great taste in vehicles. Again, here’s the complete list of offerings – if you’re a car guy also, you’ll enjoy perusing that site.
