For the first time, Mecum is selling motorcycles in Las Vegas twice a year. In addition to the annual January blowout, they’ve decided to come back in June for another auction. Right now it looks like they’ve got 223 bikes that will be going up on the block on June 1-3. Here’s 5 of my favorites:
As always, you can just skip ahead and view all of the lots by clicking here.
1. 1948 Vincent Rapide Series B Hillclimber
This incredible racer has won 5 National Championships (trophies included in the sale). It’s got a documented history and it is sold as raced by Beese Wendt, running on nitromethane.
2. 1981 Triumph Bonneville Electro
Admittedly, these bikes didn’t have a great reputation but this example has just 6 miles and the gauges are still covered by the inspection sticker. As you might guess, “Electro” refers to the fact that this got electric start, but the magic button didn’t always work very well and some dealers went as far as to remove the e-start before delivery just to prevent future issues.
3. 1959 Triumph Bonneville / 2009 Triumph Bonneville 50th Anniversary
Nice seeing two of these together – an original Tangerine Dream and the 50th anniversary version. The original bike is from the first year of production and it has been ‘fully restored.’
The 50th Anniversary model is #8 of the 650 units produced, it’s said to be ‘like new’ with only break in miles. It also comes with a windshield that I hope the next owner will put away in storage.
4. 1938 Indian Super Six
This was built by Bud Cox, who took two Indian four cylinder motors, cut them apart, and fused them back together to form a “Super Six.” The frame was lengthened by 7.5 inches and then Bud slapped on Harley-Davidson Electra Glide forks (so don’t worry, your eyes don’t deceive you). Mecum says the new motor displaces about 120 ci and produces 85 horsepower. The bike apparently will cruise smoothly at 90 miles per hour, which is something I’d like to try exactly one time. Click the above link to get more about this interesting build.
5. 1968 Husqvarna 250T Commando
From the Zimmerman Brothers Collection
Normally “Commando” makes you think of Norton, but Husky built 300 examples of a dirt bike Commando that was equipped with a 21 inch front wheel and plenty of features to allow it to be street legal, if desired: lighting, horn, CEV speedometer, and a tank bag to boot.
