Post Sale Update: This custom VL sold for $22,000 after 25 bids on eBay.
This beautiful VL is currently setup as a flat tracker but it’s titled/registered and it comes with everything needed to run it on the street as well. I really hope the next owner decides to go the street route, but I’ll love this bike either way.
Thanks to a .60 overbore, this motor now displaces 80 cubic inches (it was originally 74 ci). It’s paired with a 3-speed transmission, tank shifter, and foot clutch. The seller built the bike himself over a 4 year period and during that time he powdercoated the frame, forks, wheels, and handlebar. In the seller’s words, this is “my interpretation of a factory VLR if they would have ever made one – a mid 1930’s factory race bike or “cut-down” as they called them back in that time period. Before the seller set the bike up as a flat tracker, he ran this VL on the road for 3 years.
The 3-speed transmission is from a ’36 Harley, the seller chose it so he could run an open primary. Other features includes Coker Firestone tires, reproduction fuel tanks from Replicant Metals, a custom seat by Union Speed and Style, and custom paint in a ’32 style with different colors. The seller calls this an “iron dinosaur” that needs maintenance to keep going, but your efforts will be worth it. In the last few years, this bike was displayed at the Handbuilt Show, Mama Tried, The Race of Gentlemen, Born Free, and Oily Souls. The seller also kindly added a photo of what this bike looks like when it’s ready for the street:
