6-3 Update: This 900S2 is back up for sale. Find it with bidding up to $15,400 and the reserve not yet met
The Ducati 900S2 was always in the shadow of the 900SS – Ian Falloon originally considered this bike to be a bit of a dog, because it was heavier and uglier than its SS bigger brother. With that said, he later went on to change his mind, noting that the S2 was more reliable and better developed. Here’s a bike that hasn’t had a chance to prove its reliability, because it has just 2 miles and is still on the MSO, waiting to be titled.
1,236 900S2s were built, featuring a 864cc L-twin that produced 80 horsepower and 63.5 pound feet of torque. Top speed was nearly 130 miles per hour, but reviewers of the time period considered this to be a tamed version of the SS that were choked by stricter emissions requirements that competition like Laverda had managed to deal with more effectively.
This specific Ducati 900S2 was offered on eBay last year, though it did not sell. MotorbikeWriter shared some interesting details about this bike, including an anecdote from Dale Schmidtchen, a bike importer that has dealt with the seller before. From the MotorbikeWriter article:
“I have bought a few bikes off this guy and I know he is very shy of publicity,” writes Dale.
“He has 300-plus bikes, some worth $500,000 or more.
Apparently he also has a 1972 green-frame 750SS on which he has turned down an offer of $200,000, says Dale.
It’s never had gas in the tank, the original battery has never had fluid in it, and the sprockets have never touched a chain – this is as close to new as I suspect you’ll ever find.
