9-20-2015 Update: A year later, this bike is up for sale with an unmet opening bid of $2,000
I’ve been waiting a long time to find one of these – the closest I got was a military KLR650 that originally had a diesel but was since converted to gasoline. But finally, thanks to this Royal Enfield Bullet, I get to show you a diesel-engined motorcycle for sale!
The seller converted the bike with a 406cc clone of the Yanmar L100. The chassis has 3,240 miles but the drivetrain is new. Conversion parts were sourced from PricePart Motorcycles, an English Royal Enfield specialist. The conversion requires a 4-speed right side shift transmission instead of the original 5-speed left side shift. Impressively, the seller was able to use the stock Enfield primary side cover, which makes this look like a factory bike to the untrained eye.
This specific Royal Enfield Bullet Diesel starts and runs well, and people with similar conversions are getting about 160 miles per gallon. You’ll be getting that fantastic mileage at a very slow pace, though, as the engine puts out about 10 horsepower. It tops out at about 55mph – the seller equates it to driving a early 80s VW Rabbit diesel in terms of pep. The only concern is on the electrical side, as the diesel engine uses a generator so that at idle, you’re not really charging the battery. As long as you’re moving around (or able to kick start the bike) you shouldn’t have a problem.
Find this Royal Enfield Bullet Diesel for sale here on Craigslist in West Granby, Connecticut for $6,500.
