Indian is dying. It’s 1949 and the Indian Motor Company is bleeding money in the midst of the biggest boom economy ever. Many of the wounds are self inflicted, but Indian has an idea. Since the end of WWII they have poured their development money into a brand new model, based on the English twins of the period. The venerable old Scout name is chosen for this flagship and the project launched. Many problems (based mainly on being to market a year too soon) beset the new Scout and it is dead in one year. Indian Motor Company hemorrhaged more money and quietly bled out in 1953.
The 1949 Scout featured a 436 CC air cooled overhead valve parallel twin with a 4 speed foot shifted transmission and hydraulic suspension fore and aft. I can not find a HP rating but the bike would do about 85 MPH on the top end. It had multiple problems and was a one year only model, the 1950 Warrior being boosted to 500 CC.
This particular 1949 Indian Scout is said to be an all original, 647 mile survivor in Costa Mesa, California. It has factory bags and windshield installed which make it the ‘super sport’ variant of the ‘49 Scout. The price on the bike is currently $12,600 with the reserve not met
