The End of a Long Line – 1941 Indian 441

In America, Cruiser by Tom WackerLeave a Comment

The 1941 Indian 441 was the absolute end of the four cylinder in line motor in american motorcycles. It’s motor had started out as a Will Henderson design in the early 1920’s that was used in Ace motorcycles. Will Henderson was killed in a testing accident and Ace was sold to Indian in 1927. Indian debuted the Indian 4 less than 3 months of the purchase of Ace. Interrupted by WWII, the four cylinder didn’t come back after the war. The Will Henderson/Ace motor design was used in some jeeps during the war.

The 1941 Indian 441 was the pinnacle of pre war style. The valanced fenders had appeared in 1940 and the 1265 CC (77 CID) air cooled inline 4 cylinder motor was the pick of the litter. A three speed transmission with tank mounted shifter, a sealed beam headlight, plunger rear suspension and a top speed of 95 MPH put the 441 right at the top of the pyramid.
