Post-Sale Update: This Topper hack sold for $7,000 after 3 bids on eBay.
In its long history, Harley-Davidson has only created one scooter. As you might guess, it was not a commercial success. Harley offered to rare factory options that could be mounted on the side – either a utility box or an adorable sidecar. This restored Topper has one of the latter.
The Topper featured an 165 cc air-cooled 2-stroke engine, and because it was built for casual riders it was paired with a CVT that would not allow the rider to head away from a stop if the engine was spinning higher than 1,800 rpm. Braking was taken care of by 5-inch drums front and rear. But this example stands out due to the sidecar, which was mounted on a steel frame, made out of steel, and was finished in Birch White. For more on the sidecar and utility box (plus some period advertisements), check out this page from the Harley Topper Club.
This example received a frame up “complete nut and bolt restoration” less than 100 miles ago by the seller, who is a certified Harley technician. It’s claimed to run like new though the horn doesn’t work and the seller was unable to source the underseat tray for the tools during his restoration.
