1968 was not a particularly good year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Electra Glide had debuted as a 1965 model and 1966 saw the brand new Shovelhead motor for the big twins. The Shovelhead made roughly 10% more power than the Panhead which more than made up for the added weight associated with electric start and rear suspension. That part was fine.
The negatives in Milwaukee were in the boardroom in 1968. HD was leaking red ink with their ‘light motorcycle’ (Aermacchi) division and the decision to take the company public in 1965 had not gone well. The motor company was actively searching for financial help (can you say AMF?) and the styling was ‘stodgy’ at best.
The ’66 Harley Davidson FLH used a 74 CID (1208 CC) air cooled overhead valve V-Twin motor that produced 60 HP with a four speed transmission, hydraulic suspension and drum brakes on both ends.
This particular 1966 HD FLH Electra Glide (VIN: 66flh14684) is in Martinez, California and is listed as completely original with 22,689 miles and the original HiFi Flamingo and White paint. Impressively, until recently it had just one owner – the man in the featured image up top. Find the bike with bidding up to $14,956
