Post-Listing Update: It seems the opening ask was just too high, as this Buell RS1200 got no action at the starting bid of $28,500.
Today was supposed to be a Ducati day, but reader Zack B sent over this cherry Buell RS1200 and I couldn’t let the auction end before sharing it with you (even if the price is stratospheric). As you probably know, Erik Buell got his start working for Harley-Davidson, but he made his name when he built the Buell Battletwin, a racebike built to extract as much speed as possible from a Harley engine. His next go-around was the Buell RS1200, a bike that was offered to the public as Buell’s first streetbike.
Only about 200 were ever produced, and the half-faired, 2-up RS1200 showed off the Harley Sporster engine prominently. The engine was not modified, and was thus good for 70 horsepower. This was capable of pushing the 462 pound bike up to a a top speed of about 120 mph. MSRP when new was a hefty $14,795, but this bike was a revelation when it came out. Want to learn more? This specific Buell RS1200 stands out because it has just 111 miles, and has been with the dealer since new. With that said, it has not been run since 1991, so you’ll need to give it a mechanical refresher before you bring it back to life – assuming the next owner doesn’t just keep it as a museum piece. It’s in a beautiful “Pearl White” and comes with the flip up rear seat.
