Every rider of a certain age remembers the noise from the Norton single. That was a distinctive wail that you never, ever forget.
The king of the road for Norton in 1966 was the Atlas. A 750 (745cc) parallel twin this bike was a very large specimen from an English manufacturer in ‘66. Good suspension and an extraordinary frame made this a very desirable choice. By ‘66 Norton had made 12 volt electrics and a dual carb set up for the American market.
This particular bike is the much more rare English variant of the Atlas. If the license plate set up weren’t enough, this bike has a single carb, flatter handlebars and an extra instrument pod. Not many of them were built to English specs.
I got to hear a vintage Norton twin and a single wailing down the 491 in Eastern Arizona. It was getting dusky and the world was silent when they went by my campsite. The single sounded great, but the twin may have even sounded better.
If you want to see more of this Atlas you can find it right here on Cycle Trader at $8.999 in Honey Brook, Pennsyvlania.
