I’ve featured a few Cheney-framed off-roaders before, but this project may have the most interesting motor out of all of them. One of the legends of off-road frame design, Eric Cheney started as one of Britain’s best MX riders. Unfortunately, he picked up a blood infection while racing in Algeria and it became so bad that he had to stop racing. That was good news for his competition, as he applied his skills to making better frames and suspension designs for everyone to enjoy. Most of the motors he utilized were British, like the half-liter engines from Triumph or BSA. On the other hand, this powerplant is going to require a brief history lesson.
Founded by bike racer Jaroslav Simandl in 1949, ESO built 250, 350, and 500cc motors in Czechoslovakia. They started by sourcing JAP motors the first year, but quickly developed their own knockoff and eventually their own proprietary designs. For more on ESO, check out Motocross Action Magazine. Or for more on Eric Cheney and what made him such a wizard, check out this story on Classic Dirt Bike Rider.
In the seller’s very accurate words, “it is hard to put an exact model description on this bike.” It’s a mutt of cool parts, even ignoring the frame and motor. There are Ceriani forks, Akront wheels, White Power shocks, and potentially CZ magnesium wheel hubs. Interestingly, the frame is stamped BRIT6. Unfortunately, it’s going to need a bit of work, but I think it’s worth saving.
If you agree, you can find this interesting combination of parts for sale in Grants Pass, Oregon for $8,495 here at AutoMania.
