Post Listing Update: This ex-Sheriff Harley did not meet reserve despite 37 bids up to $159,977 on eBay.
This piece of history started as a Sheriff motorcycle for King County, Washington and the seller claims it is documented since new with the original title, a period photo scrapbook that shows the original officer with this bike, and even most of the officer’s uniform. It’s an impressively comprehensive package and a visual treat.
Harley introduced the Knucklehead in 1936 as a 1,000cc V-Twin. While HD had been using overhead valves in race bikes previously, this was their first usage of the technology in a production motor. It’s a beautiful motor that has stood the test of time, even though Harley themselves didn’t not market the new motor heavily until 1937 after some initial issues were sorted out.
This example (VIN: 40EL1845) shows 50,987 miles on the odometer and it’s full of awesome touches like the first aid kit and the fire extinguisher. I love this bike, but the price makes me weep.
