Post-Listing Update: This TD3 got no interest at the opening bid of $9,000.
In 1972, Yamaha updated their production racer from the TD2 to the TD3. The latter was based on the YDS7 and though it was fantastic on paper, real-world results were a bit of a disappointment as the 250cc engine had detonation issues. History has a way of fixing these issues (many of which could be sorted by revising the CDI) so that they can still compete in vintage racing – this example won the WERA Mid-Atlantic Championship in the Vintage 2 class in 2002. It’s basically been sitting around since and though it will need a small amount of work, it’s almost ready to race again.
Peak horsepower for the TD3 was 49 at 10,500 rpm. Fueling was handled by a Mikuni VM34SC carb and sixth gear in the transmission could be blocked off if required by a certain racing class. Dry weight was 231 pounds. For more on these production racers, check out TZ350.net.
This example was piloted to the above-mentioned championship in 2002, after which the seller dramatically reduced his time racing. In 2006 he re-prepped the bike with new pistons and lower gear ratios to increase acceleration. The original Hitachi ignition has been replaced with a Penton PVL magneto, and the seller will include another set of pistons and rings. Other goodies to note include Works Performance rear shocks, the front brake from a Laverda SF, additional frame gussetting, and a timing transponder. The oil pump has been removed, you’ll need to premix for this racer. Because it’s been sitting, the seller notes that the carbs will need to be cleaned but otherwise “it is out of the box ready to race.”
