Post Listing Update: Despite 26 bids on eBay, this Maico flat tracker did not meet reserve with bidding up to $5,049.99.
In the early 80s, Jerry Greer wanted to find out if he could compete at the highest levels of American flat track racing with a 2 stroke engine. According to the seller of this bike, Jerry was impressed by what the press had to say about Maico’s new 490 MX bike, so he got in touch with Maico and they said they responded by providing him with a crate engine and spare parts. It debuted with a 5th place finish at Ascot, and made it to the cover of Cycle News.
The Cycle News issue was in April 1981 – they asked “Can a Maico make it as a Winston Pro TT bike?” Though an issue 4 months later had an update, I haven’t been able to determine how successful this bike was over its career. It was built with a Knight frame and had lots of sponsors including Wheelsmith, ATK, Belray oils, and more.
This Maico is in “as raced” condition – according to the seller it last competed in Washington (though a timeframe is not given) and it was last shown at the Ascot Reunion in 2012 that Jerry Greer organized. The engine turns over but if you plan on running this at any point in the future you’ll have to do quite a bit of work. Thankfully, the sale includes lots of documentation and all of the seller’s correspondence and pictures and he wants “the new caretaker to have the whole package.”
