Post Sale Update: This Interceptor sold for $3,049 after 23 bids on eBay.
When one’s moto-passion centers on an early generation of the iconic Honda Interceptor series, one can be expected to eventually stray from the straight and narrow to build their vision of the model with a more millennial look. That’s what occasional Bike-urious contributor Joe Nelson has done with this second-gen VFR700F2.
Beginning with a base of refinished Pearl Crescent White with gold trim, one of three original color schemes available on the ’86-87 VFRs, the look begins its transformation with the change to black wheels with a subtle white pinstripe. Sixteen-inch fronts were the fashion thirty years ago, but this build sports a 3-spoke 17-inch from the early CBR600. The front fender has been reshaped, the rear eliminated and original signal mounts shaved to further declutter the rear. With a bit over 100 hp in stock trim the V-4 power plant certainly doesn’t need any help to keep up with today’s traffic, but it’s been tuned a bit to blend with a freer-flowing exhaust thanks to shortened mufflers fashioned from the originals with the final baffling chamber removed and refinished in satin black. Typical of Joe’s projects, all of the mechanical systems have been given their due diligence. See more at his personal site.
The second-gen VFR represented an all-out redesign on Honda’s part to erase teething problems with the first-gen models and establish the V-4 concept as the future of the sportbike. Despite impressive racing success in the Superbike and endurance arenas, the Interceptor line soon morphed into it’s hugely successful role as a gentlemen’s sport tourer — always with the emphasis on “sport.” Get back to the Interceptor’s roots with this VFR700 with bidding currently at $2,175 in Antioch, Illinois
