When it appeared as a 2002 model, Harley-Davidson’s V-Rod represented the company’s huge commitment to its perceived future with a vastly altered approach to their signature cruiser family of motorcycle design. Here was a high-tech 60-degree V-twin with liquid cooling, double overhead cams and thoroughly modern hydroformed frame. The original V-Rod eventually spawned several sub-models, one of which is our feature, the Street Rod, produced in 2006-2007.
The Street Rod was a shot at a sportier V-Rod, and it worked surprisingly well, though V-Rod buyers didn’t quite get it at the time. To gain ground clearance for greater lean angle, the seat was raised a whopping four inches and an inch more suspension travel provided. Mid-mounted foot pegs helped center the rider’s mass, the steering geometry was tweaked, and inverted Showa forks were fitted with Brembo brakes and stickier tires. With 120 horsepower and 80 foot-pounds of torque, this Harley has the potential to be a backroad blaster. With an original sticker of $15,000, huge depreciation has made the V-Rod line, and the Street Rod in particular, a bargain entry into the H-D lifestyle.
