Post-Sale Update: This Police Velo sold for $4,026 after 22 bids on eBay.
The Velocette was a commercial flop but it did have some success with British police officers – leading to the nickname of “Noddy bike”. Here’s an example that served with the London Metropolitan police force before it was acquired by a Dutch rider in 2010.
As WWII came to an end, Veloce (yes, the company was called Veloce even though all the bikes were called Velocette) decided to build a bike for the masses – like a Honda Cub that was a bit ahead of its time. But while it had plenty of good ideas (and some horrible ones, like hand starting instead of a kicker), the execution wasn’t great. For more information on this interesting (and unsuccessful) motorcycle, check out this excellent profile from the Memorable Motorcycle series at Motorcycle USA.
This example has 22,714 unconfirmed miles on the odometer and is one of the last LE’s produced. It runs well and comes with the original tire pump. Just grab a bobby hat and you too could look like this:
