Post Listing Update; This Wes Cooley Rep did not meet reserve despite 32 bids up to $10,500.
Built for just two years, the GS1000S was a tribute to Yoshimura and Wes Cooley’s success in AMA Superbike with the GS1000 (after some struggles with the KZ1000). The ’79 bikes were done up just with paint and a fairing, but the ’80 models got some special changes including a unique frame, seat, and rear sets along with electronic ignition. The US got approximately 700 of the ’80 bikes – supposedly one for each dealership.
The 997cc inline four cylinder produced 90 horsepower, which was good enough to propel the 524 pound bike up to about 130 miles per hour. It was never officially marketed with a Wes Cooley tie-in, but consumers affectionately considered it a bit of a replica. For more on the bike that changed many American minds about Suzuki’s sporting credentials, check out this profile from Motor Cyclist, which includes a quote from ’79 Cycle Guide said that the GS1000S “demands recognition as the finest all-around ride motorcycling has to offer.”
