Post Listing Update: This KLR did not meet reserve despite 34 bids up to $5,122.
The KLR650 is known the world over as a basic and durable dual-sport with a wide following and lots of aftermarket support, thanks to the fact that it basically went unchanged from 1987 to 2007. So, when the US Marine Corps was looking for a motorcycle, they knew where to start. Using the KLR as a platform, the USMC contracted with Hayes Diversified Technologies to create a military-spec bike based on the KLR650 – it was known as the M1030B1.
Hayes produced 3 military Kawis – one based on the 250 (M1030), a diesel converted 650 (M1030M1) – none of these have been released to the public, and this gasoline powered 650. The diesel converted bikes were created as the military uses JP-8 diesel for nearly everything. Read more about the conversion here on the New York Times – apparently at 55 mph the diesel bike could achieve 96 miles per gallon! The military bike received other upgrades over the civilian bike, like a AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery that won’t spill upon tipover, Progressive suspension, Acerbis 6 gallon fuel tank, wider foot pegs, skid plate, and plenty more.
This example (VIN: JKAKLEA18YA058474) was acquired by the seller just last month from a vintage aircraft museum and it has less than 400 miles on the odometer. The tires were replaced as the sidewalls were cracked, but everything else seems to be in good shape.
