Vyrus is a tiny Italian manufacturer based out of Coriano that was founded in 2001 and got its start working alongside Bimota. Vyrus has a particular propensity for hub-center-steering models that are about as exotic as motorcycles can get. The brand’s 985 C3 model is a straight-up masterpiece. The little manufacturer uses Ducati engines in all of its machines, with the example here being powered by a 999R engine. This example is the carbon-spec of the Vyrus 985, but unlike other “carbon versions” of models, Vyrus seriously goes all out to make the moniker as fitting as possible with a full carbon chassis in addition to full carbon bodywork, a carbon tank, BST carbon wheels, carbon engine cases, and carbon rotors. Making this example all the more special is the fact it is the full carbon version that sports graphics courtesy of the legendary DRUDI Designs. This example is just one of 25 units being produced making it incredibly rare.

In addition to looking like one of the most badass scoots of all time, this Vyrus 985 is fitted with some cool parts such as full carbon Zard under tail exhaust system, F1 DryBreak fittings and a special Kevlar air scoop. This example, which has 4,500 miles on its odo, has been “used as an exhibition piece” for the previous two years and was recently (or will be) re-commissioned before it goes up for sale. The seller also points out that: “belts and all consumables (were) changed May 2017.” This 985 also comes with full-factory race wiring with launch control, and adjustable maps (controlled via buttons on the handlebars).

In 2009, Vyrus swapped a homologation-special Ducati 1198 engine into its hub-center-steered machine, replacing its traditional 987cc engine with a power plant capable of putting down 211hp! MCN did an awesome write-up about the then world’s fastest production road bike which they point out possessed ten more horsepower than Ducati’s then MotoGP bike…pretty insane. According to the seller a special VYRUS model sold in May of 2008 for just shy of six figures.

Editor’s Note: When I was at the Quail this year, I stumbled upon a Vyrus and I asked the owner’s friend to operate the steering so I could take a closer look. Here’s a quick video showing the steering and the bike starting up, if you’re interested:

You can find this ultra-rare Italian hub-center-steered beast here on RaceBikeMart.com in the U.K. where it will be auctioned in October with an estimated get of $45,500 (or £35,000). We will be sure to follow-up on this unique two-wheeler with an update after its auction. A special “V4RUS” number plate is available with the bike as well for use in the UK.
