The Ducati 500GTL is one of the cheapest ways of getting into the world of classic Ducs. Unfortunately, that’s because the bike didn’t sell very well – about 7,000 were produced over a 8 year run. The bike developed a reputation for being unreliable because it would occasionally lunch crankcases.
Check out this article from Ducati News Today which better explains why the 500 GTl went over so poorly. The 500cc engine pushed out just 35 horsepower, and it was not a light bike. This example (VIN: 503209) was last registered in California in 1984. It runs well though the speedometer doesn’t work (so mileage is uncertain), the tires should be replaced, and one of the front calipers is stuck.
Find this 500GTL for sale in Lake Elsinore, California with bidding up to $2,025 and the reserve not yet met or a BIN of $3,600 here on eBay.
