Post-Listing Update: Despite 26 bids up to $64,100, this TZ700 did not meet reserve.
The TZ750 gets all the glory nowadays, but Yamaha’s first 4 cylinder 2-stroke production racer was the TZ700. The 694cc engine produced 90 horsepower, but within a year Yamaha bumped displacement up to 747cc and got an additional 15 horsepower out of the engine.
With just one year of production, the TZ700 is a rare racer. If I’m allowed to oversimplify, the engine was created by doubling up two engines from the TZ350. 238 bikes were produced before Yamaha enlarged the barrels. This example has never been raced and it still has the original Canadian import sticker. The seller says the bikes only miles are some parade laps at Homestead Miami’s Indy track, for which it got new tires. The originals are included for display only.
