Post-Listing Update: With 4 bids up to $20,000, this crate with an Astro in it did not meet reserve.
An evolution of the Pursang, the Astro was a flat tracker that was ready to race once you picked it up from your local Bultaco dealer. They were only officially exported to the US, yet somehow this example made its way to Australia…and never got out of the crate.
The Astro was actually named after Houston’s Astrodome, which often hosted the opening dirt short track races of the AMA race season, like this race from ’83:
Because it’s a flat tracker, these bikes did not come with a brake up front – just a disc in the rear. They had two stroke engines displacing either 250cc (Model 163) or 360cc (Model 164) in a steel tube frame with telescopic forks and rear shocks. Dry weight for the 360 was claimed to be 224 pounds.
The Astro is one of the rarest Bultacos, and the status of this example (VIN: HB-1640279) means I’m very interested in seeing what the final sale price will be. The original owner was a Bultaco dealer/flat track racer who kept it in dry storage. Now it’s being offered by a classic bike dealer in Australia (though the sale price includes shipping to the WEst Coast of the US).
