Previously owned by a GI that was stationed overseas, this Red Hunter boasts an impressive 56,000 miles and a sidecar!
By the 50s, the Red Hunter had an alloy cylinder head, rear suspension, and telescopic forks. In 1957, Ariel offered sidecar compatibility and consumers appreciated that it was much cheaper to run and insure than the usual 500cc bikes that were required to lug around a hack. Ariel’s updates included going down two teeth on the engine sprocket (19 to 17) and using stiffer springs in the front forks and Armstrong rear shocks. Top speed was approximately 60 miles per hour, but it would take you 39 seconds to get there. At a steady 50 miles per hour, you could expect 46 miles per gallon while pulling a light sidecar.
This example (VIN: APR8276) is said to be “set up just right for safe, easy riding.” The tank has been professionally sealed and some of the paint is not original, but a few original touches have stuck with the bike, like the tire pump. The sale includes lots of documentation as well as the British Squire hack. There isn’t much time left and bidding is still low. It’s being offered with no reserve so the future owner maybe getting him/herself a deal.
