In the wake of the Second World War, the United States was experiencing a transportation boom, and Cushman Motor Works was eager to capitalize on the trend. Come 1949, the Nebraska-based manufacturer dressed up one of its 50cc scooters to resemble popular baggers like the Harley-Davidson Big Twin and Indian Chief. Dubbed the “Eagle,” the little scooter proved an instant success, quickly becoming Cushman’s best seller. Here’s one over at Iconic with no reserve so it’s guaranteed to find a new home!
By 1958, Cushman had sold 15,000 examples of the Eagle, and the model was in need of an update. Come 1959, Cushman introduced the “Super Eagle,” fitting it with flowing bodywork on the forks and a large tail section over the rear wheel. Taken together, the stylistic changes made the scooter even more of a premium offering.
In 1961, Cushman improved on the scooter once again — this time via the power plant. With the launch of the Super Silver Eagle, the firm debuted its OMC Super Husky engine. Measuring 354cc in displacement, the four-stroke single made some 9hp at 4,000rpm and could ride to a top speed of 50mph thanks to its two-speed gearbox. Stopping power was taken care of via a pair of drums and a front telescopic fork (paired with a rear rigid axle) handled suspension duties. Cushman manufactured a range of accessories for the Super Silver Eagle, including extended mirrors, a windscreen, and a rear rack-mounted passenger seat.
This example is frame #: 193873, engine #: 160501, model #: 765879707 and the odometer shows 7,404 miles. It was restored at some point in the past but it’ll need tires before you can safely ride it.
