Post Listing Update: This Thruxton was pulled off of eBay due to “an error in the listing”.
In 1961, the Velocette Venom set a 24 hour speed record – that records still stands for a 500cc bike. 3 years later, the Venom won its class at Thruxton’s 500 mile endurance race. The next year, the Venom gained the Thruxton name and lots of goodies like a twin-leading shoe brake, giant Amal carb, upgraded cylinder head, and more.
It was a 40 horsepower racer that went on to win the Thruxton race again as well as the Production TT at the Isle of Man. For more on this fantastic bike, check out this profile on Bonhams, which calls it “The Last Great Velo”. Or, check out this article on Classic British Motorcycles.
This example was acquired by the current seller in the early ’80s after it had a rebuilt bottom end. Since then, the motor has accumulated 20,500 miles. This bike was originally sold in Berlin, Germany, then purchased by a US serviceman who brought it back with him. That’s why the restored gauges are in kilometers. Per the seller, “with the exception of a few fasteners, this is an original machine, well refurbished.” The sale includes the original German registration and logbook, as well as a “personal letter” from the original owner.
The seller also notes that this bike got an annual service in the summer of 2017. The fuel tank was drained as part of the service and the bike hasn’t been ridden since. Earlier this month a new battery was installed and a gallon of fuel was added to confirm that the bike is still ready to ride. The seller does an excellent job going into the history of this bike, noting that it has won multiple trophies at Velocette Club North America club rallies.
